Hackers is an exciting new adaptation, in the form of a video game, of methods used by hackers that includes all the mysticism and “dark” practices involved. Soon you’ll be on your way to becoming the best in the world, at least when it comes to penetrating other players’ cyber-defense mechanisms.
In Hackers, gameplay poses the challenge of attacking a series of virtual nodes. Each of them has a specific function, which is either mining B-coins (clearly a Bitcoin parody), running firewalls, or serving as a control node for an external network. Injecting malware into each node is the name of the game, until you manage to infect each of the machine’s elements.
Hackers hardly stems off from typical strategy games where you have to wait for a real-time response in order to view improvements or builds. Meanwhile sudden single attacks take place in real-time and last just a few minutes. All the resources needed in order to perform these infections are sold in-game with coins earned by playing which means that in order to evolve you’ll need to earn hacks to get credits that’ll ultimately improve your chance to win.
Most interestingly about this game is the international ranking boards that show who the best and most powerful hackers are, as well as the country with the highest overall hacking score. That being said, there’s no way to monitor or prove your own individual hacking skills and as such, the game is lacking a greater hook or story arch to keep things interesting.
